Is Gum Disease Contagious?

Is Gum Disease Contagious?

Having little kids at home, I unfortunately had many experiences with contagious diseases. From strep to flu to stomach bugs, my kids got them all and I was lucky enough to catch it from them. What many people do not realize is that Gum Disease is also contagious and you can actually give it your kids!

Research has shown that Gum Disease or “Periodontitis” is caused by your bodies reaction to harmful bacteria in your gums.  At the early stages of this disease, your gums will appear red, swollen, and bleed easily. Surprisingly, the harmful bacteria that causes Gum Disease can spread through saliva.

According to the American Academy of Periodontology, if one of your loved ones has gum disease, ” it’s a good idea to avoid contact with their saliva by not sharing eating utensils or oral health equipment.”

What’s harmful about Gum Disease?

Gum Disease is considered an infection. If unchecked, it can irreversibly damage your bones, gums, and tissue that hold and house your teeth. This will ultimately lead to tooth loss.

Why are children susceptible?

Babies are born pure and sterile with no trace of bacteria. There is good and bad bacteria in our bodies. If your child is introduced with more bad bacteria then good, there is a real concern that he or she may be more susceptible to Gum Disease in the future.
